On-Site Synergy:

Relationships are key says Developer

Alex Khera has business interests spread across a number of industries, but his passion for construction is unmistakable. He thrives on the fact that no two jobs are ever the same and loves the unique energy of a live site.

Brevity was recently engaged to work on one of Alex’s standout projects, the Habitat Apartments. As our first project with Alex, we were the newcomers to a team he has spent years refining. Alex is a self-described stickler for getting the right people; he values loyalty and trust above all else. Once a partner proves their worth, they become a permanent fixture in his delivery team.

A Developer Who Cares

Alex’s commitment to people extends beyond the construction fence. During the Habitat Apartments build, a necessary road closure impacted a local hospitality business. When the owner reached out, Alex didn't just organize signage to help—he took his entire site team down regularly for "world-famous" chicken wings and beers to boost their revenue.

This hands-on, community-focused approach defines Alex’s style. He is on-site every few days, ensuring that quality is never compromised. "You can’t pull a fast one on me," he says. "I want to build quality that is architecturally pleasing. That comes from inspecting every truckload of concrete and never cutting corners."

The Brevity Difference

Brevity stood out to Alex from the beginning. Having worked with many engineers over the years, he has a deep understanding of the work and responsibility required for seismic design. He recognized the effort the Brevity team put into ensuring the design met regulatory requirements, even when the solutions weren't straightforward. When the project demanded a fast turnaround, he appreciated the urgency and focus applied to his timelines.

Pivoting Through Challenges

Partway through construction, the project faced the challenge of a regional lockdown. Alex was impressed by Brevity’s ability to pivot quickly to remote inspections. By utilizing video conferencing and a refined documentation process, the team avoided significant delays. Alex’s description of the remote technology was characteristically blunt: “Bloody God’s Gift.” Because the team had already established strong relationships on-site, the transition to digital collaboration was seamless.

Collaborative Engineering

Relationships were the backbone of the Habitat Apartments project. Building trust with subcontractors was vital, and Alex was pleased with how the Brevity team listened to installers' suggestions. By adjusting designs to be more practical for the people on the tools, Brevity fostered a culture of mutual respect that benefited the entire project.

Looking Ahead

In retrospect, Alex has placed Brevity at the top of his list for seismic design on future projects. His one key takeaway for the next build? Getting Brevity involved earlier. “I’m not one for the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff,” he says. “It makes more sense to get their expertise at the design stage and use it throughout.”

From our perspective, the team at Brevity loved working with Alex Khera and the entire Habitat Apartments crew. We are looking forward to the next collaboration.
